Let’s start at the beginning, shall we? Science calls it the “Big Bang”. But, as Christians, we might be a little uncomfortable with that terminology. But whether it’s accurate or not, it does seem to be at least similar to the scriptures:
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)
“And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:2)
“And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. (Genesis 1:3)
“And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.” (Genesis 1:4)
“And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” (Genesis 1:5)
A rather quick and auspicious beginning, don’t you think? Actually a better term would be: Absolutely Wonderful! The simplicity of it! The glory of it! It’s beyond words or understanding. Yet … it happened! And, presto, here we are.
But, are ALL of US here? What about those who have not yet been born? Or more significant to our discussion, how about all of those who were never born … nor ever will be? Do they even exist? Have you ever thought about that?
Consider the following scriptures:
“I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.” (Matthew 13:35)
“Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:” (Matthew 25:34)
“According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world,” (Ephesians 1:4)
“Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father,” (1 Peter 1:2)
You ONLY exist because of the “foreknowledge” of God the Father. Otherwise, you wouldn’t know anything, you wouldn’t exist anywhere and you would be totally unaware of your own “non-existence”!
An interesting aspect of your own existence is you could have been created in someone else’s body. You could have been placed in the body of an Irish immigrant of 100 years ago, or maybe an “outcast” in India, or maybe in the body of a future Chinese entrepreneur destined to become a billionaire. But regardless of what body or what time in history God the Father foreknew the creation of “YOU” … He did CREATE you … and therefore you EXIST! Otherwise, you would know nothing … EVER! You would be part of a non-existent “nothingness” that doesn’t exist “anywhere” in time or space.
Does your head hurt, yet? Let’s take it one step further:
Think of all the things which you have experienced during your “existence” on this miraculous, blue marble floating and spinning through the Milky Way (which, in comparison to the whole Universe, is smaller than an atomic particle).
Think of all the joys, pleasures, tears, crisis, events and moments both good and bad which you have blissfully travelled through and experienced on your journey so far … being constantly mindful that your very own existence upon this Earth …
“…is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” (James 4:14)
But even that, being as brief as it may be, was experienced by you because God CREATED you to experience it! You are a MIRACLE, indeed! Your very existence is a gift from a loving God.
Now we come to the crux of the matter. God not only created you through His foreknowledge to experience life on this tiny globe floating through the universe, but He has given each of His human creations the OPPORTUNITY to continue on experiencing the essence of “life” itself … ETERNALLY!
“That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” (John 1:9)
“He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.” (John 1:10)
“He came unto his own, and his own received him not.” (John 1:11)
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:” (John 1:12)
“Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” (John 1:13)
Notice that God “lighteth every man” that is born into this world. Every human being has the light within himself to observe the creation of the world around him and believe in God. That is why they are without excuse if they choose to reject God.
So, what does this all mean in the end? Personally, I cannot think of anything more frightening and tormenting than the thought that, after having experienced life itself with its awareness and existence as one of God’s created beings, to have it be suddenly extinguished and destroyed forever in the Lake of Fire.
Jesus warned people to fear God who “is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28). He was referring to hell itself being ultimately thrown into the Lake of Fire and being totally destroyed … along with all of its inhabitants both soul and body!
Sobering thought, huh?
“But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:” (2 Thessalonians 2:13)
“And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.” (1 John 5:11)
“He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” (1 John 5:12)
“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” (1 John 5:13)
