Shortly before his crucifixion, Jesus had an intimate conversation with his disciples concerning his “going away”. This must have had a profound effect upon them as they listened to his words. Thomas, in particular wanted to know something that was heavy on his mind:
“Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?” (John 14:5)
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)
“If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.” (John 14:7)
“Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.” (John 14:8)
“Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?” (John 14:9)
Even today, many Christians would like to see the Father. But Jesus was very explicit in telling them that if they could see and know “me”, then they would not only “see” the Father, but more importantly, they would “know” the Father!
Also, during this same time period …
“… there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:” (John 12:20)
“The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.” (John 12:21)
Notice that they didn’t say, “We would see the disciples” or “We would see the priests” or “We would see the preachers” or “We would see the great television evangelists” or “We would see the self-proclaimed prophets and prophetesses” or “We would see the Christian booksellers and movie makers”!
They desired to see ONLY Jesus!
Is that your desire … to truly see Jesus and to know Him? If it is, then you shall surely see him … and the Father also.
But you have to know where to look!
First of all, turn off your Christianized television set. Secondly, quit buying Christian books and DVD’s expounding on everything from “seeing” angels to “visiting” heaven. And, thirdly, open that book gathering dust on your shelf called the Holy Bible and start actually reading it for yourself!
“Oh, but I’m not a theologian”, you might say.
Good, you haven’t been polluted by a lot of man’s ideas, assumptions, presumptions and doctrines!
“But I’m just an ordinary, everyday Christian. How could I possibly understand the Word of God for myself?”
Have you been you born again through faith in the blood of Christ shed for you on the cross? Have you been sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise?
If you have, then Jesus has good news for you! He said…
“… I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.” (John 16:7)
“… when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” (John 16:13)
So, how does the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth?
Simple … by speaking the words of Christ into our hearts and minds and “bringing to remembrance” everything He has ever spoken to you.
“It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the WORDS that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” (John 6:63)
“Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The WORDS that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.” (John 14:10)
From the time that Jesus “went away” to be with His Father, he has continually wrought in us a far greater “work” than he ever performed while on the earth.
“But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, … to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.” (Galatians 4:4-5)
“And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the SPIRIT of his Son INTO YOUR HEARTS, crying, Abba, Father.” (Galatians 4:6)
“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:” (Romans 8:16)
“And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ;” (Romans 8:17)
If we are joint heirs with Christ, then that means we have obtained an inheritance in and through him. And a portion of that inheritance has to do with the ABILITY to understand God’s Word through the Spirit of Christ which dwells in us! Even as Jesus said:
“He that is of God heareth God’s words:” (John 8:47)
This brings us to one of the most profound and beautiful truths found in the New Testament. Please absorb these scriptures into your heart and mind:
“Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.” (1 John 2:24)
“These things have I written unto you concerning them that SEDUCE YOU.” (1 John 2:26)
“… the ANOINTING which YE have RECEIVED of him ABIDETH in YOU, and ye NEED NOT that ANY MAN teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, YE SHALL ABIDE IN HIM.” (1 John 2:27)
“And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.” (1 John 2:28)
YOU have received an anointing!
YOU have the ability to understand the Word of God!
YOU have the Spirit of the living God in your heart which will guide you into all truth!
YOU have both the Father and the Son!
YOU have eternal life!
However, you ALSO have a responsibility before God to walk in that anointing and be taught of the Holy Ghost … intimately and personally!
After listening to and watching all of the sermons, books, movies and DVDs proclaiming this or that revelation, prediction or visitation …
…it is ultimately up to YOU to earnestly and humbly “search the scriptures” for the TRUTH!
And, by so doing, “continually abide in Him”.
Jesus exhorted ALL believers:
“If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;” (John 8:31)
“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32)
So, in conclusion, we are to “Look to (ourselves)…”
In other words, consider ourselves to be personally responsible to the anointing which God has given each and every one of us.
“… that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.” (2 John 1:8)
