Jesus said:

“Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you:” (John 6:27)

What meat does Jesus have to give us?

Jesus said:

“Whoso eateth my flesh, … hath eternal life;” (John 6:54)

“For my flesh is meat indeed, …” (John 6:55)

To answer this in a simple way, it’s best to start at the beginning! The scriptures declare that:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John1:1)

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)

This is as simple as the Gospel itself:

Jesus Christ IS the Word of God … and that Word has become flesh (meat) so that you and I can eat it!

How? Jesus said,

“It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. (John 6:63)

The flesh (meat) that Jesus gives us to eat unto eternal life is His WORDS!

In the Book of Joshua, we find God instructing and encouraging him:

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” (Joshua 1:8)

The “book of the law” that God was referring to was the Word of God as found in the Pentateuch … or, in other words, the first five books of the Old Testament. This was the “law” to be followed to the letter. However, as Christians, we know that Joshua (i.e. the Jewish nation) couldn’t keep the “law”. But the principle was the same:

Meditate in God’s Word and you will make your way prosperous and have good success!

Today, many Christians enjoy what is known as the Prosperity Gospel, but they’re really just following after the words of men instead of meditating on God’s words! So, they consider financial success as a measure of being prosperous (supposing that “gain is godliness”), rather than acquiring the true riches which are in Christ Jesus through His Word! Many Christians don’t even feel it necessary to take their Bibles to church anymore. The service is so full of Christian entertainment, music and men’s words that there’s simply no need! So, the Bible is either left sitting unopened on their lap, or it’s been left at home gathering dust! No wonder so many Christians are being lulled to sleep in this Laodicean age! But, rather than digress too deeply here, we’ll leave that topic for another time.

The Apostle Paul said,

“But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. (Romans 2:29)

“But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.” (Romans 7:6)

When a Spirit-filled Christian reads the Word of God, it is no longer a dead letter … but a spiritual revelation of the very nature and will of God! The Holy Scriptures, when meditated on and quickened by the Holy Ghost, become the very life and newness of Christ Himself in the heart of the believer! This process is what enables a Christian to mature and live a life pleasing unto the Lord!

Another wonderful, spiritual blessing is the fact that the Holy Ghost is faithful to quicken those very same words in your heart and mind … every single time you need them! As it is written:

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” (John 14:26)

That’s what it is to eat his flesh! And when we, by the grace of God, follow through and do those words which we have devoured, then we receive another blessing which was also spoken to Joshua:

“Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” (Joshua 1:9)

Or, more precisely, from the lips of Jesus:

“As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.” (John 6:57)
